Use a Modem with Lotus Notes

Overview

Lotus has not kept up with the latest modems by adding additional modem files. Most of this can probably be attributed to the overall expanded use of TCPIP instead of COM in the transmission of data. For one thing, even today, modems are very slow in comparison to the broadband solutions. Additionally, TCPIP can be secured when connecting to Notes using the built in encryption over that port.

Having said all of that, we continually get questions about modem files (e.g. Where is the modem file for the Nokia 6310i?). To that end, we have a link below to the modem files from Lotus. However, they haven't been updated since 1999. They do have a "generic all speed modem" choice and we are providing instructions below (from Lotus) on how to configure that for really any modem.

Lotus Modem Survival Kit

There is an ftp site where you can download the "latest" files. As mentioned above, they haven't kept up so these won't be recent but perhaps you are curious.

Instructions on using Generic All Speed Modem

Lotus has a technote (#1095604) entitled "What To Do If an MDM File Does Not Exist within Notes or the Notes Mobile Survival Kit". A lot of that information is reproduced here but you may want to check out the technote (#1095604) because there is more information available.

Notes/Domino contains a modem command file which contains the basis Hayes AT commands and S-register settings called the Generic All-Speed modem command file (filename: Gen_All.mdm) which will work with virtually all modems including those modems for which we currently do not have a specific modem command file.

To use this modem command file:

a. Select, File, Preferences, User Preferences, Ports.
b. Select the appropriate COMx port where x represents the port number and then select the COMx Options button
c. Within the Additional Setup dialog box for Modem type select Generic All-Speed Modem File (with instructions), set Port Speed to 115,200 and lastly enable Log modem I/O.

2. Once a modem connection attempt has been made, send the log.nsf file along with the following information in order for Lotus customer support* to create a specific modem command file:

a. AT Command Set;
b. S-Registers;
c. Result Codes (verbose codes not numeric codes);
d. If possible also send us a copy of Microsoft's modem driver (*.inf file)

Note: The information above can usually be found in the documentation that came with the modem. In some cases, this information is found on a disk which came with the modem. In the latter case, the customer should install the appropriate files containing this information and send that information to Support.

*Once the above information is received, the incident should then be escalated to the XPC/modem PAE team so that a *.mdm file can be written.

Supporting Information:

To enable the XPC console, place XPC_CONSOLE=1 into the NOTES.INI file and restart the client or server. Note: The XPC_CONSOLE= parameter is supported on WIN32 platforms only.
